Changing the Salesforce Contact ID for a Registered Participant
Changing the Salesforce Contact ID for a registered participant should be handled carefully, as this identifier controls how the participant record is linked between systems.
Important Considerations
- The Salesforce Contact ID is typically used as a unique identifier during synchronization.
- Manually changing this ID may break the link between Salesforce and the event platform.
- It is not recommended to directly edit the Contact ID unless absolutely necessary.
Recommended Approach
Option 1: Update the Contact in Salesforce (Preferred)
- Open the Contact record in Salesforce.
- Ensure the correct Contact is associated with the participant.
- If needed, merge duplicate Contacts in Salesforce.
- Allow the integration to sync the updated record automatically.
This ensures the integration remains consistent and avoids orphaned records.
Option 2: Reassign the Participant to a Different Contact
- Unlink or remove the existing participant-contact association (if supported).
- Link the participant to the correct Salesforce Contact record.
- Run or wait for the next synchronization cycle.
Note on Disconnecting a Contact
The actual action of “disconnecting” a Salesforce Contact ID is performed by
removing the Contact’s record in the integration’s Inspect tab.
This ensures that the participant is no longer linked to the previous Contact
without directly editing Salesforce IDs.
When a Manual Change Is Required
If a Contact ID must be manually corrected:
- Ensure the new Contact ID exists in Salesforce.
- Verify that no duplicate participant records will be created.
- Perform a test sync to confirm correct mapping.
Best Practice
- Do not modify Salesforce Contact IDs directly unless instructed by technical support.
- Always resolve duplicate Contacts within Salesforce first.
- Maintain a consistent identifier strategy (Email or External ID).
